Default Diesel starter conversion

My 882D starter was having problems with a sticky Bendix so I decided to convert to the gear reduction starter as outlined in R Bedell's post "Kubota starters" Having completed the job (and very pleased with the improved action of the GR starter) I have a suggestion.
I found I could not get the old starter out no matter how high I jacked the motor. I ended up cutting off the lower ear of the old starter. I then realized that if I had done that in the first place I would not have had to jack the motor at all or disconnect motor mounts etc. The job would have taken half the time. I understand that this destroys any core value of the old starter, but now new starters are so cheap most suppliers don't want the core anyway.
Go ahead, cut off that ear and save yourself a pile of work!

I was able to get mine out by raising the motor, but would have done it your way had I known. I bought my replacement online so the core went into the dust bin anyway.
