How does the braking system work on the 63 Original? Also the steering shaft is very loose, it looks like its missing the gasket or seal around it to keep it in place. Does anybody know the correct name for that part?

the biggest thing i can say is if you go to partstree.com and put in cub cadet for both the make an model you can see the parts diagram of your tractor
the brake is a drum that has a shoe that goes around it and is activated by the pedal the steering column question there is a gasket that helps hold grease in |

Hi...and welcome ... If you look thru my post reworking my Original, there's a photo of the brake assembly It's a drum but works only on the left side rear wheel, so high speed runs down hill on wet grass should be avoided.
Always great to have another "O" running! John

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
