Default Cub Cadet Low-boy

I was wondering if anyone on OCC had a Low-boy. I have always been fond of them and wondered what they were like and what they can do for work?

I have an International 1960 yellow round nosed Cub Loboy and love it. Bigger than a garden tractor obviously, and smaller than a Ford 8n.

They made a lot of fast hitch one point attachments for it. Having a fast hitch really makes it useful. But single bottom plows and harrows/tillers can attach to draw bar.

Most have live hydraulics (cat 0 and lifts about 350 lbs) and a PTO. PTO on cubs is opposite rotation than standard tractors, and is faster. Have not seen many Loboys that do not have these.

They're more-so a collector's item or useful if you have a small farm. I had one I fully restored 7-8 years ago and just recently sold. The 782 would run circles around it cutting grass despite 10" smaller deck than the Lo-Boy had. Get a fast hitch or cultivaters though and they're a nice gardening or very small farm tractor. Only 10-15hp so don't expect to pull a barn down but they are easy on gas and fun to use. Luckily you can also buy a plow for them that isn't fast hitch. People will sometimes say implements are expensive for them but they're still cheaper than new 3 pt. hitch implements for another tractor and a good Cub can be had for 1000-1500 usually. When they're tuned right, they'll do about anything you ask of them except cut grass in 3rd gear.

I have a 154 Cub Lo-Boy. A little different from the Farmall Cub, but is the same drivetrain. They are really great tractors for the farm. It has a 60 inch deck that covers a lot of barnyard area for mowing, perfect for pulling hayracks around and doing small odd jobs. Ours we got in 1967 or so with around 500 hours on it and had it ever since. I bet it has 4000+ by now. Its on the list of getting repaired right now...the clutch finally wore out in it, along with some of the driveline components. Its definately paid for itself! Came with a snowblade too, Ive never used it but my Grandpa said he used it all the time.

Since the PTO spins opposite of a regular tractor a normal tractor run impliment such as a brush hog can't be used?

THEORETICALLY... couldn't ya just grind an edge on the opposite side of the blade's, you don't necessarily need the brush hog blades to provide lift for the grass to evacuate so you wouldn't need to worry about it having the wing on the back of the blade like a regular mower. I don't know about running the gearbox in reverse although I can't seem to see an issue with it really...anyone ever gave it a shot? I realize there would be issues with other types of attachments though for sure, but I think a brush hog could be made to work with it.

If you really wanted to use a Cub as your small farm tractor, you can get a 3 pt. hitch and pto reverser for it. Two problems though, you'll shell out way over $1000 extra dollars just for the hitch and reverser and the Cub doesn't have enough power to pull even the smaller bushhogs. IH made a 42" brush cutter belly mower for the Cubs that will solve this problem. They also made an implement for about anything you'd want to do with one. The implements go for collector prices but usually still cheaper than new implements for other tractors.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
