What needs to been done to convert an external break trans to an internal break trans?

Swap out the whole rear end.

I know you can swap out the reduction housing but I am unsure if the pinion shafts are the same.

Austin, I wondered the same thing myself, so I researched it.If you look at a drawing/breakdown of the 2 units, you will see that the shaft on the external brake transaxle does not extend out to attach the disk for the internal disc brake set up. So, as Mr. Bedell says, your best plan IMHO is to get another complete transaxle if you want internal brakes. They are not too difficult to find, (in my area at least).

Simple stroll through the online parts books shows they are different. That was easy.

I've heard conflicting stories. Which is why I asked here. I did look at the online parts break down but I don't always believe everything I read on the internet.

As a general rule the parts books are accurate. Don did point out on here the other day that even the IH hard copy he had was not correct in reference to second gear on a 122(?) it was listed as a 17T and I think it was the 19T. I may have that backward, and I don't remember the model. I just remember the book was wrong.

Interestingly enough, if you look at a 1000, it has two different pinion gears depending on if it is internal or external brake. Different in length, and tooth count. Explain that. I haven't found where they made up the difference yet..... Shows the same ring gear for both pinions.

Yeah that's what I am talking about. I assume it is a different pinion since it does not need to engage the internal disc but I'd rather here it from someone with the experience.

Ok.

Maybe Don will be around shortly and he can tell you that the shaft is longer on the reduction drive end.

As with any Parts Manual, one will always find a error or discrepancy. Been doing the HVAC/R thing since 1970 and seen my share in that arena. Seen a few errors in the Cub Cadet Arena too.

BUT..........99+% of the Cub Cadet parts manuals are accurate.
