I had been waiting for someone to show up to help me lift the Kohler off the workbench and put it in the 149. Today was super nice weather, no one showed up so I lifted the engine off the bench and put it in the tractor.
Sooner or later one has to take the bull by the horns. Only problem was I put the wires on the S/Generator reversed. It wouldn't turn over, so I came in and looked at my pictures. Corrected that and it spun a few time and started up and promptly blew a spot in the head gasket and leaked compression. I took the new gasket out and put the old one back (which looked good to start with) torqued it down and started it back up. All seemed to be well, so I ran it around over the yard and pulled a good sized log out of my way. More fine tuning is needed, but at least its running, I didn't see any oil leaking or fuel dripping. Pictures maybe tomorrow. I did notice the transmission seemed to hesitate a little from slow to high speed, if I moved the lever up quickly. That fluid level was low too, but it was smooth and not noisy. Been fun, got lots of help from you guys, of which I am most appreciative. Be back tomorrow.... Dave in SW Missouri |

I used an after market gasket without the fire ring. The compression went through the gasket, between the top and bottom layers. I thought it was flimsy looking when I put it on there, only to have it go immediately.
We'll see how this original one holds out, it looked good, and at its worst it is better than the new one was when it was new. Chinese junk maybe? Thanks for all the help. Dave in SW Missouri |

Just get a new KOHLER head gasket and be done with it. A used one probably won't last, either.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
