Default 582 frozen rear end

this happened last year. and I cant find how the water is getting in.
the boot on the shifter is fine. and I dont have any gear oil leaking out on the garage floor in the summer. it does set outside most the time, under a tarp.





thank God for Glycol , or the cast on the inside would be rusted. the cover plate was rusted and has some pitting.

Looks like you did a great job of getting it cleaned out. Are you using Hy-Tran? Moisture could be getting in thru the breather hole on top of the casting.

You may want to remove the axles and pull the axle housings and drain out the sump of each housing. There is more than likely a good amount of contaminated fluid in those.

I thought that too. but it cant be . there was so much water in it the oil was coming out around the shifter.
I woud think any condensation would evaporate with each use in the summer.
as it warms up from use.

I agree with Methos...check your breather opening, or try to keep that area covered when storing if possible. It also looks like the gasket sealing your shifter assembly is leaking, sans the fluid shown in your pic running down, it may be entering around the bolt holes there. When was the last time you changes the hytran and filter? Perhaps its been like this for quite some time?

I did jack it up , leaning it over . that did drain a lot of it out. im sure there is still some in it. its due for some work after winter. it needs a new brake and a paint job.

Your manual transmission doesn't have a filter, only the hydro's do.
