Hydro help.

My 123 developed a leak from what seemed to be the gasket between the transmission and hydro unit. I have split the tractor and cleaned up 42 years of under-frame crud. I've ordered the various gaskets/seals I think I'll need. The hydrostatic ran perfectly.... only the leak. I'm thinking it's better to leave well enough alone and simply replace the gasket. Make sense?
I read on another thread about continued leaking after replacing the gasket. Can anyone provide some experience on this issue? Proper torque requirements. Any other issues?

I'm experiencing the 'one thing leads to another' syndrome. I've replaced the worn steering unit, replaced all the ball-joints and the sheet metal is on its way to be sand-blasted.

Or you are satisfied with the overall performance of your Cub and are experiencing make it as good as new syndrome. Classic signs... a leak .. not acceptable. Steering ... not like new must repair.

I have been lucky. The hydrostatic drive I have only needed a smallish adjustment. So I can't give you any been there done that wisdom.

I'd change the 3 seals on the pump that you can get at while you have it apart. These are hard to get at on a NF without splitting the tractor, so you only want to do this once.

I have replaced about half a dozen cork gaskets and never had one leak. It's very important that both surfaces are clean. I don't use gasket sealer. Be sure to torque the pump-to-trans mounting bolts correctly.

You're right RPalmer, it's not really 'one thing leads to another'. Whenever she needs some TLC she gets it! Good friends do that for each other.

Matt G. thanks for the advice on the seals I'll definitely replace them. Good to know the new gaskets have been consistently OK.

Matt G., besides the cork seal, what are the other two seals that you recommend replacing? I've got a tractor (1650) split already, and have just finished installing the cork gasket. Unfortunately, I read your post too late and used Permatex on the non-adhesive side of the cork. I don't think any harm will come from it though. I hope.

Both seals on the input shaft (front and rear) and the right side trunion seal. The left side one, you have to take the pump apart which isn't worth doing unless it's leaking really bad.

Thanks Matt. The good news is that those seals are dry as a bone on my machine. It looks like just the cork needed to be replaced. I made the trunion repair as noted elsewhere in this forum, and the springs move like a swiss watch now. Time to paint and reassemble.
