Take the steering wheel off and put a front wheel bearing in the steering tube, the shaft will slide through the middle and the outside fits perfect in the steering tube. There is originaly a plastic bushing that goes in there!

I have an eye bolt in the ceiling of garage, with a come-along attached. I mainly use it for removing engines, but it works for steering wheels too. First, the PB Blaster, and lots of it over a couple days, tapping on the loosened nut as I apply it. Then I wrap a chain around the base of the steering wheel, attach it to the come-along, and elevate the tractor so that most of the weight is pulling up on the wheel. Whack the loosed nut a few times, and sooner or later it pops loose. I've done three that were on there for 30-40 years this way with no damage to the wheel or threads. |

I found it even eaisier to do what Matt did but instead of a hammer, I used a air hammer and the thing popped off real quick.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
