The Spec Number "46407D" indicates it is a Kohler K-241 10HP

Roland is correct that the 46407D is the Engine Spec number for a K241. The other number is the engine Serial Number with the E prefix representing a year of Manufacture of 1969 (the last year Kohler used letter prefixes) and the numerals representing the one-up serial number.

Thanks guys for your help!

Duh, Why didn't they just put that in the mod # instead of that other mumbo jumbo.
It would have made things sooo much easier.

Ole 147:

1) The serial number style is just their way of numbering the gazillions of engines they made.

2)The Spec (ification) Number is also necessary because Kohler made those engines for hundreds of different manufacturers and other applications which had their own specific requirements, so Kohler uses the spec number to identify the exact characteristics of any particular engine. The one you cited is only for a K-241 found in a Cub Cadet (per IH specifications!).

3) That's why...:biggrin2.gif:

MBounds,
So your saying that if you just bought an old engine you could look up the spec. # and tell what the engine originaly was put in (cub cadet, jd, ect...)??

Diz.. Pretty much - in theory... Unfortunately, the Kohler K-Series Manual only generically defines where you find the Specificatins Numbers and what they look like. I have never seen a listing showing who/what Kohler made that specification for...Don't think that there is a such "look-up" listing from Kohler or anyone else. Researching the TC parts manuals can give you the Spec Numbers for Cub Cadets and I imagine a John D**** dealer might be able to do the same for the Kohlers used in their machines, but that's trying to do it the hard way - chasing down each manufacturer that ever used a Kohler... For instance - Bolens, Jacobsen, Montgomery Ward, etc., are dead...They can't tell you anything...

The Kohler parts look up does show what a lot of the spec numbers OEM use was. Not all, but a lot of them. Just click on the model number and you get a whole list of the spec numbers and some of the uses.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
