Default question on tranny fluid

According to the chart, it says gear drive O-1x4/5 uses hytran or sae30 oil and the 1x6/7 -82 uses hytran only. Can you use 30 weight in the 1x6/7-82 also? If not is the hytran the same hytran used in the hydrostatic? Thanks Jeff

Heah Jeff, If it says you can use HY-Tran that's what I would stick with. That's all I have ever used in my 1200 and in dads hydro grasshopper. Think that's what IH recommended in all their garden tractors gear drive and hydro.

Yep, better off using the Hytran in both gear and obviously hydro units. It is the water displacement properties that make it the best to use.

You can't go WRONG using Hy-tran BUT You might go BROKE!! Shop around!! Try buying from a larger equipment service shop bring your own clean container. My local CC dealer gets $24.99gal and $16.99 for hydro filters. For the hydro guys MY research found Fram PH2844 ($3.19 at Auto Zone) to have the same CC full flow filter requirements, Please check for your self.

That Fram filter is an oil filter...don't use it. You need a hydraulic filter. THey are not the same. There have been Wix, Fleetguard, and NAPA numbers posted in the past that cross to the OEM filter.

Not to be CROSS but Wix 51410 And Napa 1410 BOTH CROSS REFERENCE to Fram PH2844. I don't have the Fleetguard # to cross over. I would recommend using what ever you feel is best for you! If your tractor is under any warranty always use factory parts. I feel Hydraulic fluid is oil and I will Use the Fram Filter. BTW I don't use Hy-Tran, I use a quality product that meets the Sunstrand requirements. I change my oil and filter more than recommended. Time will tell!! AS I STATED Please check for yourself!!

Hydraulic fluid and engine oil are similar, but an engine and a hydrostatic transmission are not. Hydraulic oil filters trap much finer particles than an engine oil filter. The tolerances on the hydro pump are much tighter than on an engine, so the cleaner it is kept, the longer it will last, hence the need for a hydraulic filter and not an engine oil filter.

Just because they cross to each other does not mean they are equivalent. They have the same overall size and mounting interface, but the Fram filter number is for an oil filter, and the WIX/NAPA numbers you posted are hydraulic filters. There are numerous oil filters that'll physically fit, and probably cross reference to the correct filter, but they are not a suitable replacement. I have also heard of quite a few people having problems after using the wrong filter (i.e. an oil filter), and I have also had hydro problems on tractors where Fram and filters were used in place of the correct hydraulic filter.

I can also tell you this has been beaten to death over the last decade on multiple CC forums, with one member going so far as to buy several different 'equivalent' filters and cut them all open to see how well they were constructed. The result of that was the creation of this acceptable cross-reference chart. They went quite a bit further than it appears you did with your research to determine what filters are acceptable substitutions.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
