I must be missing something about the low boss head. I see these advertised as being better for cooling. Generally speaking, for a stock/OEM application, I believe the opposite is true.
Lets take a low boss head and put it on an engine with a heat shield and a gas tank saddle. First of all you are going to need spacers to get the proper torque on the head bolts. The spacers are made of steel. So you have just put a piece of heat retaining steel where aluminum from a high boss head would have been. You have just made the head run hotter. The only way I can see a low boss head actually running cooler would be if you ran a stack and no heat shield and were running a wide frame without the gas tank mounted on the engine. But that is not stock/OEM. So what have I over looked? I just don't see these as running cooler on an unaltered engine. |

That wouldn't be true either because the heat shield keeps the air moving past the head so it can carry the heat from the head away...no heat shield, significantly reduced airflow, and a hotter-running engine. So that's not going to help either.
