How's everyone doing? I got to ask everyone's opinion about this semi-dilemma I am creating! Now a fella about 5 minutes from my house has a 782D for sale (its on ebay as well). It has hubcaps! 50" deck, 48" snowblower and front hydraulic outlets. Asking price is $2500!!

I love my 782D. That's a fair price if it's in decent condition. I probably have more than that in mine, but I don't care because I'm not selling it. I had an 1862 once...it's been parted. If taken care of, the motor will outlast the tractor. I plowed at a plow day over the weekend with mine, ran it HARD for about an hour, and burned about 3/4 of a gallon of diesel. You cannot beat the fuel economy.
Check out the driveshaft by driving the tractor if you can. At full throttle, there should be almost no vibration. With a new driveshaft, you can't tell the tractor's running by feel, and I'm not kidding. If it shakes at full throttle, the driveshaft is probably shot and will cost about $150-200 in parts and an entire afternoon of the worst work you've ever had to do...I've done 3 of them, and it's the least favorite repair I've ever had to do in 6 years on these things. Subtract that amount from his asking price if the driveshaft is bad. If it hasn't been replaced, it probably is bad. Diesels eat driveshafts. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I've had 2 diesels and still have one. |

He's down to his last 22 hours and he has no bids, ya know why? cause it's over priced. Dash is broken. Seat needs replaced and who knows what else, deck is not pic-ed.
Fair deal at $1800, not a dime more. And I bet you'll have $500 in it in less than a month. Tires? aged and hard, no traction. Drive shaft as Matt says. Keep looking and you'll find your deal if this guy won't come back to earth and join us. Scott |

Matt and Scott, thanks both of you for answering my questions!. I really appreciate the input. Its been on craigslist locally for around 2 weeks and shape and price I think are the reasons why. I guess if I'm just learning how to fix my 127 then a driveshaft fix is out of my league for now!! Would have been real cool to get a nice tractor so close to home..

The dash on mine is broke worse than that, it didn't come with a thrower. Mine had a broken nosepiece and the deck needed tons of work. Not sure why you'd complain so much about a $40 dash on a $2000 tractor. The paint is nice, the grille is good...I've have lots of original tires like that that are just fine... |

Sorry Matt but I'm not 'harsh'.
I spent about $12k over the last 9 months and I studied prices most of those months, I've seen better deals. I learned the hard way, you'll never get your money back, it's that simple. Once I get into working on one I find it's the little parts here and there that drain my play money. Someone got a nice 1772 in OK a couple of months ago for $1500, I'd rather have a Super if I'm gonna go diesel. I know a guy in OH that bought a 2084 (?) Cyclopes diesel with a 2 stage blower for $750 running, hood was broke. There are deals out there if you want to look. I'm about to pay $95 for a NOS dash, wish I could find a 'good' used one for $45. As for tires, climb my hills with old hard tires, I dare ya. Scott |

BTW Matt I run my 1811 up a hill that is so steep the front tires float, I have to lean forward to keep it down. I gotta take pics sometime. I don't play with old tires and I have my reasons for my comments.

One other thing Matt. One July 2 I found a 1882 in EXCELLENT condition locally for $500 but I was to leave for DC on the 3rd for the 4th so I passed. Would have easily sold for $900. The only reason I passed is that would have eaten into my go to DC money. I wanted to do a "82" conversion as I have all the parts here to do it. Point is there are deal out there, some folks don't know what they have, those are the deals to look for. I could have had another Super for $500, oh well.

But, most of us look at Cubs as a Hobby and the enjoyment of fixing and using these tractors. If I kept all my receipts for my five Cubs, I probably be amazed. I do it because of the above and I really like all my Cubs. So, there is more to the Hobby than looking at the costs. And of course, that is true with ANY hobby. papaglide: I usually don't respond to "price questions" in that prices vary from condition, area of the country, and the notorious "I want it bad factor".:biggrin2.gif: You should look at this tractor, ask all the questions you want, research as best as you can, and then decide for yourself. If you are satisfied with your research and can afford the selling price, then jump on it. From all that I have read about the Cub Cadet Diesels of this era, most people are well satisfied with their Cubs (782D). I too, would like a 782D or 1512 to add to my collection.

papaglide,
You are going to spend your money on something. If not this then something else. Some conciser the 782D as "the tractor" to have. If you are one of these people then get it. I'm sure I'm not the only person who would pay what others call too much for what I want. What you are looking at has hub caps. Not many do. It has a snow thrower. Those things are not cheep and you know it will fit the tractor without issues. That's spelled easy on...easy off. And one other thing. How much would you pay to have your dream tractor delivered to 5 min. from your house? It's not always about what the other guy will pay. It's about what you really want and what will make you happy. But you already know that. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
