Cub Cadet 682
Just picked up a CC 682 Feb 1981 with a blown Engine for a $100.00. All the tin is in Great shape,good tires, and a very good 53 inch mower deck quick release system good hydrostatic transmission. Person said everything ran ok till engine blew up. And I do mean blew up! piston is in about 3 pieces and I still have to tear it apart but I think i will need a new engine for it. It's a kohler 17 hp engine KT17S. One on Ebay $ 1700.00. Hope to find a good used one in my area. If I cann't I may part it out. To recoupe my money. But the reason I got into all this is to save these machines. I DO YOU THE CUB BRAND. Would This mower deck work on a CC100 or CC122 if i change the sub frame? Will post pictures when i get a chance.

If I can find a good engine i will not part it. I just took the mower deck and sub frame off. spindles are nice and tight no play. Belts in good shape. Pulleys good. Almost lost a foot. Had the deck up againist the trailer (I know thats a stupid move) working alone and I hit the trailer deck fell down i jumped out of the way but it hit right across the big toe OUCH. will lose that nail! REMEMEMBER GUYS SAFETY FIRST EVEN AT HOME. STUPIDY TAKES NO VACATION. I guess i'am lucky if it hit above any futher it would of broken the foot.
Couple of questions: 1)Are spindles all the same between the diffent decks 2) are all tire rims from the different models interchangeable. 3) is their a way with out a engine to see if the hydrostatic transmission is still good.

I would love to find the deal you just did, and I would look around to find a engine for it. I live in GA, and found a nice Kohler Magnum I think it was twin 17 hp on a mower for $300, I bet cash money would have taken it home for $200-$250 so keep your eyes open around and put life back into your 682.. or you could always do a road trip to Ga I would be happy to take it off your hands. cann't make georgia but have family south west of ashville nc that want me down for a family reunion at end of aug. its a 19 hour trip from here a 2 day drive for me. what part georgia are u at . Family tells me hot down there. My moms family settle the great somky national park area. My brother in law mothers homestead is a national monument in cades cove in the park.

You could look for a Kohler KT-17 Series II Motor, or a Kohler M-18.
With the M-18 (Cub Cadet Spec'd) it will be a drop in fit and only minor electrical modifications.

I've been looking on the internet for the kt17 new 1700.00 too much money will keep eye out. I just want to drop a engine in no modification. Keep it all orginal. Was their a problem with the orginal k17 when it came out? To me looking at the machine the problem was the maintenace. they never cleaned out the engine compartment more than likly didn't checked oil. Heads are broken camshaft broken and engine block broken. Hoping to tear down engine completely today. But first have to clean up garage so I can put up a table to work on.

Hey fer100, saw this surfin thru ebay. I know it says for JD etc, but they can prolly do a Cub spec also. don't know anything about them, they also show a bunch of M18's in their "store". Almost a grand but cheaper than new. Just a thought, Marty

If that tractor has the Series 1 KT17 in it, then yes there was a problem with them. The rod journals were not pressure lubed and if you got them on a angle, the rods would run out of oil and it would blow the engine up. Kohler addressed the problem and released the KT17 Series 2 with pressure lubed rod journals. The series 1 engines are not worth the money to rebuilt. You would be way better off putting in a Series 2 or a m18. the M18's are pretty much the same motor as the KT17 series 2, but the M18 has a magneto ingition system which eliminates the points on the older kohlers. The different ignition is why you have to modify the wiring and it's actually a very nice upgrade. The M18 are a smoother running engine in my opinion. If it were my tractor, I would opt for the M18.
