What's a 782 worth?

I'm in Georgia and have located a gentleman with a 782 and really have no idea what it is worth, so was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Here's what I know:

Tractor is in decent shape, not cherry, but not rough, either.

From the serial number (which I didn't write down), I believe engine is series II, based upon info found here. Engine seems to run well and does not smoke.

Has mower deck - not sure the size. Deck rusted through in one spot but doesn't otherwise look in bad shape.

Rear turf tires have good tread, but there is sidewall cracking due to age. Front tires are low tread but serviceable.

Can't read the hour meter, because of condensation within.

No rear lift or other attachments.

Not much to go on, I know, but that's all the info I have at the moment. If anyone has any ideas as to how much this thing may be worth, or how I should further investigate this unit, I would be much appreciative if you would share that here. Not sure, but I believe it could be bought for $500-800, but then I know that you can get a whole lot more in these tractors if anything goes wrong.

What is he asking for it? You'll need some input on it's value from locals, location has a lot to do with what they are worth...in my area it would probably go for $500-750, just based on what info you provided.

. All kidding aside, if it's a red 782 it's worth more in my opinion and if it has a cast iron rear thats another plus. Does it have the IH hub caps? It's hard to tell the hours on these because they keep rolling over and you never really know how many hours are on it. Good luck and if you don't purchase it I know someone that would like one.

As you can see, I know very little about these. Are you referring to the rear axle assy? And cast iron as opposed to what, and how can I tell?

I don't recall any hub caps.

Probably toward the high end of the range you mentioned. As far as asking the locals, I think that this is the only one of these in Georgia. Well, maybe not, but it's the first I have seen. But, then, I haven't really been looking. I could ask the local John Deere guy, but I don't have any idea if he would know, either.

If the serial number is 720000 and above it will be aluminum and made by Cub Cadet Corporation(CCC). CCC was the premium line of equipment for Modern Tool & Die (MTD). I wouldn't let this change your decision on the purchase because under normal use they work fine. The red Cubs were the last series to be made by IH when production ended in April of 1981. I think the cast rear has 7 bolts on the cover plate and the aluminum has 9.

aluminium is usually left bare, and has a 'sandy' texture to it from the casting process. Oxidation is a white 'rust' that doesn't chip and peel like normal rust. Cast iron is normally painted, may have some typical rust. Generally smoother texture. All else fails, borrow a refrigerator magnet from the wife.
