smoking 106
i have only been a cub owner for a few months but i am on this website almost every day. i bought a restored 106 from a co-worker and just recently made up my mind to actually use it to cut grass. when i bought it of course it ran perfect, but now when mowing it seems to lose power on hills and white smoke comes out the air filter. just wanted some thoughts on what the prognosis is. thanks for any help you can give.

i dont know about you guys... but I'm thinking he means the breather cover. I would like to clarify
Are you talking about the round air cleaner, or the small rectangular breather under the carburetor? smoke out of the air cleaner... that would be a major major problem. please let us know. pics?

oh no! its the round metal housing that contains the air filter and connects onto the carb with a wingnut. it dont have any dark smoke coming out the exhaust just light colored smoke out the air cleaner or carb and oil in the carb and air cleaner cover.

i just checked and did not realize how close the rectangular breather is to t he carb so the smoke could be coming from the breather i'll have to double check. i am sure that there is oil getting into the round air cleaner housing it must be coming through the carb somehow?

My 128 was blowing smoke out of the rectangle breather also. Once I pulled the engine apart I found that the top ring on the piston had stuck. It took very little effort to make it pop loose, but at that point I had decided to go on and rebuild the engine after 37 years of faithful service. You might try adding some Marvel Mystery Oil to both the gasoline and the oil. I use a couple of ounces in a 5 gallon can for my gas everytime I refuel. It might help with the smoking issue. It will take a few tank fuels to get worked into the system and help clean and lubricate it.
