Default I'm a idiot.....

rebuilt my motor today after getting some machine work done and adding a steel flywheel.

Got it all together and put it on.

Went to start it and it fired right up.

Shut it off and then a few minutes later tried to start it. Would not budge at first. after a few seconds of holding the start button I freaked. I thought the motor had locked up. I hooked up my charger to start to make sure it was not my battery.

Went and bought a new battery and it still did the same thing.

I tried to push it into the garage and it was in gear so the motor turned a little. I decided to try to start it again. It fired right up. Shut it off and it would not start again. When it was running it had a knocking sound to it.

I started trowing tools around. (blaming ptsd) and went in the house. Went and googled k301 and hard to start. It said valve lash. I thought to myself. I set it at .008.

Then it hit me. Did the new cam have a compression release spring on it. Pulled the cover. and it was intact. Then I thought about the valve lash thing again. Maybe I set the valve lash on the part of the stroke when the release was supposed to be open and the knocking was due to excess valve lash on the rest of the cycles.

Read a little more and I figured it had to be the problem. I have no lights in my new enclosed trailer and being OCD to keep things running I grabbed my flashlight and headed to the trailer. I be damned. I tightened the valve lash on the exhaust side. And it turned over perfect. So I spent $30 for a battery I do not need.

I have not started it yet but do you think the knocking sound will go away now? i would assume so. At first light I will be out there working on it.

I was thinking about replacing it anyway. The date code on it was January of 08. So having the old one as a backup at the track will not hurt.
