hi all,
Ok, I got the trans fluid changed AND filter. Took the mower deck off awhile ago but I put it back on without major problem. It was my first time putting one back on and I think I did pretty good at it. Prior to this the tractor has been running decent since I bought it without any real maintenance on it yet. Only ran it a few times to shovel snow. Still some white smoke coming out but seems to clear up after letting it run. After the fluid change and deck back on I wanted to go out and mow some lawn to see if I got everything set correctly. She ran but kept backfiring and smoking badly. I could feel the heat(and smell burnt oil) from the engine and she seemed to run smoothly at half throttle(a few times). She quick on me a few times hards. Fed up I decided to quit for the day. After doing some grilling I wanted to try her out again for the hell of it. This time she ran great and I got the lawn mowed! ![]() ![]() ![]() I want to make a note that I added some really good star-gon fuel treatment to the gas. It only takes one ounce to EVERY 3 GALLONS! I dont know if this is what caused all the bad backfiring, white smoke, vibrations, etc or not. ![]() My next plan of attack I think I want to tackle the carb, points and condenser. New Oil, air filter, trans fluid and filter, pumped up the tires.....DONE. |

sounds exactly like how my 1450 would act before I rebuilt the carb. It would run like a champ one time, then could barely keep it running the next. After the carb rebuild it's been a drastic improvement.

Would that cause the smell of overheating/burning oil, and white smoke?

if it's running super rich like mine was yes, in fact I recall the engine smelling really hot before where it does not now.
Look at this vid, this is my tractor prior to rebuilding the carb. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUKYQ4GF6Fw Right at the 1 minute mark it starts running really bad, misfiring, smoking white etc. This is because the float bowl was so full of fuel it was leaking right into the carb unmetered in any way. The float valve was not working right and just let fuel keep flowing to the point that it was just flowing straight into the carb. The excessive white smoke is unburned fuel, you can smell it. Watch the whole vid and you will see it backfire and shoot some black smoke, that is the old dirty oil burning. The carb's job is to provide an air and fuel mixture. If you are running rich it will run hot, ping, knock, it can detonate and come apart sending parts of your engine all over and injure you. There is a youtube vid of a guys cub burning to the ground when it caught fire too. It's a dangerous condition and should not be ignored, a carb rebuild kit is 13 dollars at any cub cadet dealer. I can make a vid of how it runs now, it's like a totally different tractor. It still smokes here and there but that is due to old age, and the smoke is darker and smells like oil. |

no trouble at all Nate, glad to share my experiences if it saves someone else some trouble. You might find that yours still smokes a little too even after the carb rebuild but that is pretty typical of these old kohlers that have not been gone through. Mine cleared up smoking quite a bit though once it was running right. Seems to toot a little oil smoke during the first minute of running and after that, I just see a little bit here and there, like right when I idle it up high from a slow speed.
Good luck with it, keep us all posted on how it goes. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
