Default Why is an 86 numbered the way it is?
The thread about the CL machine that turned out to be an 86 got me thinking. Why is an 86 numbered 86? The way I'm thinking about it is that an 86 should be an 8 horse gear drive narrow frame. 88 would be more appropriate and line up with the rest of the WF numbering. 88 = 8 horse gear drive WF.

First number 8 meaning 8 hp and 6(even number) meaning gear drive. There was no 8 hp offered for a narrow frame. The 86 replaced the 73 which was the last of the 7 hp K-161. The 70 series(if you will):70,71,72 and 73 are in a number class of their own and the last number does not reflect manual or hydro transmission and could be said the same for the Quietline series/82 series.

I have wondered the same thing. Makes NO sense to me the way IH numbered that tractor.

Actually it does work for the QLs.. If the last two numbers are 00 it's a gear drive, 50 if it's a hydro.

86 would mean 8hp and the 6th series of tractor.

maybe the engineers at IH just wanted to start a confusing conversation on what would be this dang fangled contraption called the "Internet" 30 some years into the future.

In my world, and what would have made sense to me, would have been this.

7 HP Cubs
* Original
* 70 for the 70/100 Series
* 72 for the 1x2/3 Series
* 74 for the 1x4/5 Series
* 76 for the 1x6/7 Series

8 HP Cubs
* 88 for the 1x8/9 Series
* 800 for the Q/L Series

But God only knows why the IH people labeled their models the way they did.
