Default Hands in the air, charging problem
So, still needed the jumper box on my 1450 this morning. Battery had been on a tender all night.

But, it was wicked cold, so thick oil could be the problem there.

However, the ammeter slowly drifted to 0 as I continued to blow for an hour. Every now and then it would peak over to the + side, but for the most part, ran at 0 when the blower was running.

So far, I have done the following:

Cleaned all the grounds.
Installed the voltage regulator from my 782 (charged fine on there)
Swapped to the battery from my 782, both are older batteries.
Swapped the solonoid that was on a different 782, and wasn't bad.

What next?

Well, actually all the wires with regards to the Charging Circuit need to be clean & bright.

Are you getting 28-32VAC on the two outside terminals of the V/R @ WOT..??

Are you getting 13.7VDC on the center terminal of the V/R to Ground @ WOT...??

Default 982 not charging
My 982 has pretty much the same problem. I did the static test and operational test.and found a bad voltage regulator. I changed the regulator and now show 13.5 volts at the V/R. However when I turn on my lights or PTO my amp gauge shows discharge. When all my lights and PTO are shut off, the gauge doesn't move from zero. Any ideas? It would be greatly appreciated.

Get a DVM or VOM and measure the resistance (ohms) from the V/R case to the negative battery terminal. You should have zero ohms resistance. If you don't, you have a bad ground connection somewhere.

Talking 982 is charging
checked the ohms from the vr to battery -.checked out great 0 omhs.started the engine.volt meter showed no charge engine was surging like it was trying to shut off and start back up.started chasing wires got to the back of the key switch gave a little wiggle and low and behold the volt guage showed a charge.removed the switch cleaned up all the wires and the blades on the switch and everything is working great.thank you one and all for all the help and advice all is right with the world let the beer flow.
