A 3/8 NPT is not a 3/8 SAE ( bolt thread)
Go to the Hwd/home cheepo or Blows and compare or ask a friend

Parts tree shows it as a fine thread headed plug, with "O" ring, as J..
Hall stated.
So caliper and thread pitch gauge will tell you for sure.
It will not be a pipe plug, unless it has been re threaded.
