Appears to me to that there are no "slots" but raised ridges on the end. But maybe slots.
If it has ridges, I think it is some sort of one time use, "drive into a hole" rivet type of fastener. The one pictured looks like it might have never been installed.
If it even came from his rider, it might be a factory extra that was dropped into the machine somehow during assembly and it finally rattled around to where it could fall out.
