I took the transaxle off and checked the fluid level. It is full but black. The fan moves ok. I cleaned out around the moving parts on the outside of the casing. I'm not in a hurry to take the casing apart if I don't have to. The seals are fine - no leakage. No odd noise coming from the transmission area.
Can anyone suggest what might be happening and how I should tackle this issue?

If the belt and pulleys are ok then the transmission is failing when it gets warm. Unfortunately, it is a common problem with these light duty hydros. Replacement is your best bet but it is a pricey one.
