Supplied air from an outside source are very good, but can get pricy.
For the hobbyist a good mask with FRESH charcoal canisters works for me.
Myself, I use NORTH brand, but others are just as good.
it is very important that one gets a tight fitting mask with no leakage.
With fresh approved canisters as one should, you will not smell the paint.
If you can smell it, either the seal is not good or you have the wrong canisters or they are old.
If one uses a surgical mask, paper dust mask or an N-95, you might as well use nothing.
----just my two cents.
