I vote transmission. 1st and reverse are connected together on the top input shaft of the transmission side of the trans axle. I would guess that something happened to the 1st & Reverse shift fork that moves this gear combination, it probably happened when you were mowing in first and it stopped. I've seen this on the pulling track before. You can remove the shifter cover and look inside at the shifter forks and rails without causing any harm. Good luck.
