Hey Dave You will most likely get lots of advise on what is the cause of the hard starting issue. Here's my take. How did it start the first time? Did you let it warm up good? You should go over and re-torque all the fasteners. Check and clean the points AGAIN. look at the plug (coulda got a bugger on it). The carb adjustment could be problematic to diag. usually that indicates internal leakage or restriction. Did you remove the welch plugs? Is the main jet seated good? Just cover all the basics. you have done a lot of work here and its easy to over look small details. If issues still exist than you might need to tear into it more. Be patient.
