I usually smear some grease on the cam lobes before buttoning it up.

How well did you lube the rings before you installed the piston? The way my dad taught me to do it (and the way he always did it, and the way his dad had done it) was to get a coffee can, put enough oil in to cover all of the rings on the piston when it it is placed head first in the can, and then dunk the piston/ring assembly in there and spin the rings a bit to make absolutely certain they have enough oil in them. It may not be the case, but your piston looks nearly dry in the pictures.
