I take mine all apart to clean it and I believe it helps the starting of my cubs. If it is your first time taking it apart, then be careful to note how everything fits together....especially how the brushes fit into the spring loads. You can clean the inside with a lint free cloth and some mineral spirits to help remove the carbon dust from the components. Some guys on this forum videotape the process of taking things apart for the first time so that there is no guessing on how things go back together!
