I would use a dry lube for the external linkage. Grease and oil are dirt magnets and will cause all sorts of crap to stick to the linkage and wear it out rapidly. Graphite, or my personal favorite, TDL garage door lube (made by the same company that makes PB Blaster) would be a better choice. You also don't need to lube it after every mowing.
