A lot of it is in the engine RPM and type of blade. Even though they are all just a single blade a lot of the wal-mart jobs and entry level Sears don't turn a fast enough RPM at the blade tip. I switched out to a gator blade about 3 years ago and it's just much more lift as well as slicing the clippings up 2-3X more.
