Ive actually had a few tractors with no button at all, and they still stopped and stared the pto, but unfortunately the center of the pto, and corresponding arm wear down... Tools come with time, I was given many by may father who was a machinist, and acquired many at estate sales, garage sales, and e-bay actually.
Good luck

I wish I knew the actual dimensions, I just "Eye balled" it when I made mine. If I were you I would just start big, and shave it down till it fits snug. The diameter of the plug I used was 3/4" and after grinding off the threads, it was the same diameter as a factory button. The thickness of the button material was eyeballed too...I have replaced so many over the years I had a idea of the thickness. Its not super critical as there is quite a bit of adjust-ability with the turnbuckle/rod. Let us know if you decide to turn some out
