Go back and test drive it like others have mentioned, checking operation of the clutch and all the gears. I have a recently acquired 149, it runs great, no smoke, however, when you pull the dip stick while it is idling, it has severe blow by, I am surprised the dip stick stays in it and it uses a considerable amount of oil. I am guessing it has rings stuck, you would never guess it consumes oil as badly as it does, there is no hint of smoke from idle to full throttle I am planning on a full restore including the engine overhaul while it's apart, so it was not that big of deal to me, everything else works as intended and the hydraulics work great with no leaks.
I think for $300 it is a good deal, even if it acts like mine does, I would still try to buy it, of course that would be a point to Jew him on.
