It's an open ended question with no perfect answer, but do you have any thoughts as to which one, based on what tends to break on these things (cub cadet vs craftsman) is 'easier' to fix and/or which tends to break less often?

That I can't answer because, except for the engine, front axle, and paint color, they are the same tractor. With the XT2 GX54D, you get easier dealer support. With the Craftsman, you get a Kawasaki and a much tighter turn radius. And both have the same parent company, Stanley/MTD.
