Kinda at a loss for what to do next. Any ideas?

Changed the engine oil and filter - old oil looked awful. Really, really thick. It did only have 9 hours on it.
Started it up and it sounded nice.. Mowed about 100 yards and the steering linkage bracket on the frame broke.
Pulled that off, welded it up, put it back on and got the lawn cut. Took my earmuffs off after shutting off the PTO as I was about to shut the mower off and the rod knock is louder than ever.
Guess I'm rebuilding the motor now, too. At least at some point I'll have a whole new mower!
I have an old cub cadet with a small deck (like 30" maybe?) I'm going to see if I can coax back to life for now.
