They sure can be frustrating at times.

My generalizations when troubleshooting:

If it's not getting spark, it's usually the points that aren't making good contact, no 12V to the coil primary, or a fouled plug



If it's not running without the choke on, it's usually time to :

1) remove the fuel line to make sure that plenty of gas is entering the carb from the tank (keep a jar or can around to catch the gas that will probably leak out)

or


2) It's time to remove the carb, take the float bowl off and blow out the passages with compressed air (starting by shooting air back into the jet opening to blow out any dirt back out the fuel intake port)
