My local tool rental years ago had a 16hp John Deere, (model number escapes me at the moment) with what I think was a Brantly back hoe unit. They said it worked well except for going over ruff ground, it would get hung up. Four wheel drive would have helped allot. More than likely, if It was a 16HP it was either a Deere 300 or 316 Kohler with a Brantly Backhoe, which Deere called a 330 backhoe By the time the 316 Onan came along, which was a 16 HP engine originally, the only backhoe marketed for it was Kwik-way There was also a compact 16 HP 655 (Deere built at a Horricon, WI) or 17 HP 650 (Yanmar/Deere joint built In Japan), which a Bradco Backhoe could have been used on the Bradco was really made for the small to Large frame compacts.
