The direction can be changed,i have had it done,if fact the starter on my 123 is from a sears suburban.I did not do the work,but the guy who did changed the direction,and rebuilt it for about $60.The cubs are a bit odd,because most of the time it is normal to have the s/g on the flywheel side,but because when IH put the gear reduction on the Cub transmission they had to put the engine in backwards.
