You may be able to find "Garlock" valve packing material at a hardware store. It's a rope/twine type material impregnated with graphite. It was used years ago to repack valve stems and pump shafts. The gasket on a lot of those old style glass filters was made of cork. But you could use rubber or make one out of cardboard from a cereal box or the back cardboard from a pad of note paper.
