I don't know why it backed out, but now would be a good time to buy a couple more just in case. McMaster probably has them of various sizes for a reasonable cost. The actual cost is proportional to how bad you really need it when the snow is deeeeep...

Was it the correct (spirol or roll) pin type? Never trust the previous owner if you're not the original owner.
