Default Cub 72 reduction shaft question

Hey all,

I just got the rear end out of my 72 for some long over due maintenance and noticed some play in reduction shaft that I'm not sure of. Some back story, the previous owner cut out a hole in the frame tunnel so the driveshaft coupling is visible. I had noticed that when I push on clutch pedal the coupling/ reduction shaft appeared to move forward and back. So now with it out of tractor the shaft does not have any up and down or side to side play. But it does have play forward and back (as in toward the engine and toward the rear of tractor). Is this normal or sign of worn out bearings? It does turn freely with out any noticeable noise. I haven't taken the shaft out yet, looking for insight before I do.

Thank you
