You can whatever you want to, but I would not just change the filter without changing the oil too. One of the most beneficial things about changing the oil in a hydro is that you have to remove the rear plate to drain it. That gives you the opportunity to reach in there with rags and clean out all the sediment and general gunk that accumulates in the bottom of the differential. Make sure you have plenty of clean rags before you start the job. It can be pretty dirty in there if it hasn't been changed in awhile. If you don't clean it out, anything that might be in there will just move into your new clean filter right away.
It's a little more expense, you'll need a gasket and about 7 quarts of Hy-Tran, but it will be a far more satisfactory job when you are done.
That's what I would recommend.
