Has anyone here converted to a Combo Coil/Ignition Module (like the ones used on SV530 and SV540 Courage motors)?
Such a conversion would completely eliminate the points. However, to make this work properly, it is likely to be necessary to cut a new keyway in the existing flywheel.
PS Excerpts from the Kohler SV540 manual set forth below regarding the SV540 coil/ignition module which is triggered off of the flywheel magnet (rather than points).

==============================================
The SV540 manual explains the system as follows: This system uses a capacitive discharge (CD) coil. Ignition timing and spark remains constant regardless of engine speed. Timing of spark is controlled by location of flywheel magnet group as referenced to engine TDC. A typical fixed ignition system consists of:
● 1 magnet assembly which is permanently affixed to flywheel.
● 1 electronic capacitive-discharge ignition module which mounts on engine crankcase.
● 1 kill switch (or key switch) which grounds module to stop engine.
● 1 spark plug.
