A little unclear about -- do you wire this in line with the spark plug cable or can you hook it up to the coil? I don't like the idea of splicing into the HV cable but it's not like the ol' tractors an airplane so I could get over that...

That made me "laugh out loud"
The ones I've seen were "inductive" getting the signal from a small gauge wire wrapped a turn or two AROUND the HV lead to the plug.
I can just picture an actual "tap" to the high voltage lead, and every time the plug fires,
the hands spin on the meter just like a cuckoo clock on Saturday morning cartoons when I was a kid.
