"running it at full throttle from the very moment he started it" So? That's how most of them run and they need to be while mowing to keep blade speed up, you want to go slow then gear down using the trans.
as long as it wasn't being over revved, that wouldn't have done it. if the governor was working, it would not have over revved. unless he had his fingers in there holding it open.... probably just from normal wear and tear. those tractors aren't exactly new, now a days.
