That will happen.
Sounds like it's time for a new gasket, easy to make with a sheet of gasket mat'l available at any auto parts store.
Was it showing signs of leaking there before you removed the bolts?
Other than draining the rear end, if you have a lift table or some other way to elevate the rear of the tractor, it's easy to do by running the front wheels off the table and securing the tractor to the table w/the rear wheels on the end and slowly raise the table high enough so the fluid will not run out once the cover is removed.
But then you may get lucky and install the gear box and not have a leak once it is tightened back up.
DO NOT overtighten the bolts and DO NOT use bolts that are too long or risk breaking the tapped holes as they re dead end. If you break the end out inside the case you will then have BIG problems to contend with.
