You sure? I don't think even if you had the battery hooked up backwards it would spin in reverse. The starter for sure won't engage even if it is spinning in reverse. The bendix is a screw style. If it spun backwards, it would pull the starter gear to the starter, not out to engage the flywheel. Even if you wired the solenoid wrong, it wouldn't spin in reverse. You better check again.

While at rest the starter gear is towards the starter (against the starter). When power is applied it spins counter clockwise (as viewed from the gear end of the starter) and does not leave the position its in while resting. It does not engage.
