I purchased the 54" deck new and has never been apart.
On the 48", the center pulley is smaller to increase tip speed to (I'm guessing) be equal to the 54" deck.
I install the PTO belt around the pulleys before I roll the deck rearward to lock into position. No stretching required.

I hadn't even considered doing it that way, in my mind it seems like the tension of the mule drive spring would fight against getting the deck in place on the hanger.

Even with the belt on and everything in place I thought the tension seemed too tight... but I could be wrong. It's happened once before.
I'll try that with the new belt when I get it. On every tractor I've ever owned the belt has enough slack in the mule drive spring to roll it on with the deck in place.
