I don't have any trouble using the standard lift on my 1200 w/ 38" deck. As you mentioned the arm is long, an the decks don't take too much to get them up. And you really don't mess with it much once you start mowing.

I'll 2nd not bothering with adding any hydraulics. They weren't designed that way, and you'd need to mess with the side panels. Something that makes the QL look very clean IMO.

I love my 1200, and can't wait to get it back in mowing duty. If you take the time and effort to go through it, you won't be disappointed. I mowed a hayfield (literally) with my 1200 and a 38" deck last year.
