I would have just removed the 4 bolts on the cam cover and fixed it from there. Wouldn't have cost so much, or taken so much time to do from that hole. I mentioned that in post #6.
I agree you should adjust the valves. Especially since you have it out and all apart anyway.
Is the hole just stripped? I've put heli-coils in several and they held. Alvy is right, a cast iron pan fixes all issues.
