When you had it lifted the wheels turned by hand right?
I don't know the 2000 series, but does it have the transmission release rod? Had a mower that had the release had locked up causing the transmission to not move. Moving the wheels by had though wasn't an issue.
Someone else can chime in but the wheels moving in the opposite direction when turned by hand is normal in an open differential. All of my mowers have always did this (and cars too)
