From here it looks as if the spindle cup is worn quite a bit. It is what keeps the crud out of the spindle.
Go to the parts lookup and it will show you the order of the parts assembly. The cups are still available, I think about $10 each or so. There should be a friction washer between the cup and the blade also, then the big flat washer and the nut on the grass side of the blade.
